'The fact that I get my products delivered earlier creates more peace of mind'
October 18, 2023

Since the beginning of this year, the Rijnsburg location switched from the traditional distribution process to demand-driven order picking. The result is the Select Delivery service, in which buyers can choose the time-slot in which their products are delivered. "Quite an improvement," argues Sander Hogenboom of Sanders Fleurs.
"In the past, I have occasionally felt negative about late delivery of my flowers. In 2022, it sometimes happened that deliveries were not made until around 1 o'clock or quarter past 1. That caused tension within our company, as we also want to deliver on time to our customers in France," he says.
Sceptical at first
"Initially, I was also sceptical about order picking, because at first it seemed like the old system worked better after all. Even with order picking, it took me longer to get my merchandise, and the same goes for fellow buyers. But I also understand that all beginnings are difficult, and that it cannot be flawless all at once."
"Then Royal FloraHolland came up with the pilot early delivery of Clock presale transactions, which has now become part of Select Delivery. We were allowed to participate in the pilot. It resulted in me having my Clock Presales in my box on Mondays before 8:00 am. Incidentally, I then have the rest of my trade in by quarter past 10! At least I no longer have to wait for end of distribution. That means I can leave as early as between half past 12 and 12 o'clock. That's great, and really an improvement on how it was."
'We get better rest'
So the fact that the early delivery pilot has now become an official service (the first period of Select Delivery) is more than successful for Sander. "It suits us incredibly well. We get better rest. Because even in terms of driving and rest times, we will have to comply with the law. You don't want to get into trouble in Belgium or France, because the fines are high. I regularly hear about drivers who don't take rest periods very seriously. We want to prevent that and fortunately we can, because we have our line well in place."
Sander further explains, "At the moment, I am also using the Select Delivery 10:00 - 13:00 clock pilot on Fridays. This gives me better loaded stack trolleys, which means I don't have to bulk up as much. I could also start my working day later, but the habit of starting early is still there. That will take some time".
Does Sander perhaps have any wishes for the future? "Suppose different time-slots would soon be possible, we would especially benefit from early delivery on the Monday before the clock, as that is now only available for Clock pre-sales. In doing so, especially listen carefully to customers' wishes, that would make the delivery processes better for everyone, I think."
