Incentive to promote the use of red and grey reusable plant trays
November 28, 2022

Encouraging the use of reusable plant trays reflects our sustainability ambitions. Reusable plastic trays reduce not only the amount of plastic waste in the horticulture chain but also its carbon footprint. By changing the rate structure for reusable plant trays in 2023, we're making the use of red and grey reusable plant trays even more appealing.
The ultimate goal of this adjustment is to implement a similar system for single-use and reusable plant trays in terms of charges for packaging costs. In the current situation, buyers compensate most of the costs for single-use plant trays, while the costs for reusable plant trays are shared between buyer and grower. Consequently, the costs for growers are higher if they switch from single-use to reusable plant trays. To solve this undesirable situation, we are taking the first step by bringing the cost structure of reusable red and grey trays in line with that of single-use trays. This way, we are encouraging the use of reusable plant trays.

Rate structure amendment lowers barrier to the use of reusable trays
From Monday 2 January 2023, growers will save on costs if they use red or grey reusable plant packaging. We are giving part of the rental fee that we charge upon issue back upon supply. In the transaction, the rental fee for buyers is increased by the same amount as suppliers are refunded. The kickback of €0.03 will remain in place.
From 2 January 2023, the adjusted rate structure will be as follows:

The subturn rate for red and grey plant trays will not change.
Reusable trays remain cheaper than single-use
With the adjusted rate structure, reusable plant trays will continue to be cheaper for the chain than single-use ones.
